Who Watches The Watchmen

Lawyers for Fox are suing Warner Brothers to prevent their upcoming $120 million release of “Watchmen”. Apparently, Fox bought the rights to a “Watchmen” movie back in the 80’s, and may be trying to stop Warner Bros from ever releasing the highly anticipated film.

In a recent Variety article, Fox claimed that they would prefer to kill the movie rather than get paid.  As soon as news hit the web, fans went into an uproar, promising to boycott Fox’s movies including the upcoming ”X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”

Entertainment Weekly is now saying that not everything is quite like it seems. According to a Fox source, the studio has filed its complaint several times before ”Watchmen” went into production, but Warner Bros did nothing about it.

“Of course we are concerned about the fans; however, any disappointment from the core fans should not be directed toward Fox,” said a studio source. “What we are doing is seeking to enforce our distribution rights to ’Watchmen.’ Legal copyright ownership should not just be swept under the rug and ignored.”

I know that this lawsuit stuff is a bit boring, but here is something that fans might find interesting: Fox is not looking to stop the movie from being released. If Warner Bros cannot prove that they own the rights to the property, Fox is simply looking to get paid or receive distribution rights. So for now, ”Watchmen” will be hitting theaters on March 6th, 2009.
